HOLD YOUR FIRE
YOU, YOU POINT YOUR FINGER

HOW’S YOUR FATHER

SEE YOU AT THE DANCE TONIGHT

GIVE IT ALL AWAY
AIR-RAID SHELTER
TELL ME WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN
MAGIC DOOR

HOLD YOUR FIRE (Patto/Halsall)

Hold your fire
Don’t shoot me
I’m in need of a friend
And I’m cold and seeking shelter from the storm
Put aside your rifle

Help me steer around the bend
Help me find my way back to the road for home

You see I’d grown my hair, I got my head all straight
Went after the American dream
But I always ended up outside looking in on someone’s scene
I was raised on hope and plastic carrot strung out right before my face
I chased every pretty woman looking my way twice but they all disappeared without trace

I’ve been shoved around from town to town it came so naturally
I’ve been stopped and searched maybe fourteen times on my way from A to B
I’ve been pointed at by children while I was sleeping in the park
And I was heading home dejected when I scared you in the dark

Hold your fire, etc.

You could see me there at every happening with my album by the Byrds
I was shown how to question the great "I Ching" but I could dig some of the words
I’ve smoked a ton of marijuana, I sat crossed legged till my legs went numb
I made peace signs at the farmers when they called me a no good bum

I’ve read pornographic literature and I’ve studied the underground press
I had given my all to Krishna who I was told would not take less
I spent three weeks making necklaces from oriental beads
They were stolen by my guru while I was high on glory seeds

Hold your fire, etc.

See I’d taken to wearing sandals and I’d given up watching T.V.
I was rolling up grass in the American flag and I was sick from snorting "C"
I blew my mind out on a trip one night and I ran all the way back to town
But the minute I saw the lights in their faces I freaked and turned right around

Well my skin turned yellow and my eyes sunk back from my diet of boiled brown rice
I would shuffle past bright warm houses to my groove pad cold as ice
I’ve been beaten down and busted and I’ve wound up on my own
And there’s nothing left that buzzes me so I’m returning home

Hold your fire, etc.

YOU, YOU POINT YOUR FINGER (Patto/Halsall)

You, you point your finger
Stare, you feel no shame
Raise your hand in anger
Swear that I’m insane

You, you smell my freedom
Makes you squirm because I smile
How you hate my long hair
Call my music vile

You call me a junkie
Call me filth and scum
Keep me from your daughter
But my time will surely come

You, you joined the army
Fought a bloody war
Came home with a trophy
Turned into a bore

You, you think you’re civilised
With your connections you can’t fail
But you treat your wife and family
Like you bought them in a sale

You, you’re blind to beauty
Only power can quench your thirst
You scream to bring back birching
Keep a list who should be first

You, you slowly fester
Gripped by your disease
Despise your next door neighbour
Strange he feels like me

Me I’ve felt your anger
Me I’ve felt your scorn
Me I don’t know nothing
Me I’ve just been born

Me I m slowly learning
To bide my time and wait
Me I’ve grown accustomed
To the burden of your hate

But remember when you point and stare
And wave your arms up in the air
When you bastards die
We’ll still be here then we’ll take over

HOW’S YOUR FATHER (Halsall)

We were told to start collecting names
Of the people who didn’t want to appear
But we came so confused by the things we couldn’t hear
We started to move towards the right hand side
To get a better view we walked right inside

I took down a few names of people we had seen
Mary Lloyd and Steve McQueen
I didn’t want to stay so I wrote it all down
And by this time my head was spinning round

I was woken up by the chamber maid
Who cleaned up the mess where I had laid
I apologized for having stayed too long in their nice new house
I felt I didn’t belong so they moved me on

I was told to wait outside and don’t get in the way
This kind of thing don’t happen every day
I was hanging around outside the door
Muling and puking all over the floor
I didn’t care anymore

We were told to start collecting names of people
Who didn't want to be seen
When we arrived on time they wondered where we’d been
We started to move in the wrong direction
They didn’t understand that we need protection

I was woken up by the chamber maid
Who cleaned up the mess where I had laid
I apologized for having stayed too long
In the nice new house I felt I didn’t belong

I was told to wait outside and don’t get in the way
This kind of thing don’t happen every day
I was hanging around outside the door
Muling and puking all over the floor
They didn’t understand that we needed a hand

SEE YOU AT THE DANCE TONIGHT (Halsall)

I heard you creeping round my window
I know you’re hanging round my back door
I don’t know what you’re waiting for
I don’t know what you’re waiting for

I know you’re trying hard to come down
And find me when I’m on my own
I know you have my future sown
Even though you’re fully grown

Do I have to change my ways and say I’ll never do it again?
Count the days until you set me free?
Do I have to let you people walk all over me (No)

Well you’ve been talking with the lady
Yeah, she’s been telling you to move yourselves
She’s telling you to prove yourselves
She’s asking us to run like hell

Well I can see you in your plain clothes
Yeah, standing by the lake
Stop fooling round for Heaven’s sake
Yeah, you know I have a living to make

Do I have to change my ways, etc.

Well I’ve been here such a long time
Yeah, and I’ve been waiting for a chance to greet you
Oo, I’ve been waiting for a chance to meet you
Just what can I say to hold you down

You know it’s hard to find somebody
Who isn’t so afraid
You got me shaking like a leaf
Just what can I do to bring relief

Do I have to change my ways, etc.

Well I can see the sun is rising
It’s lighting up your face
And in my lining there’s a trace
I don’t believe in wasting space

It’s time to pack up my kimona
And move on down the line
Pack away my patent leather shoes
Yeah, pack away my patent leather blues

Do I have to change my ways, etc.

GIVE IT ALL AWAY (Patto/Halsall)

Do you think it really matters all that much
If we drive in style or we walk the last mile to the gallows

Though you tried it makes no difference to be told
That you’re just too late
But the hangman couldn’t wait till the morning

So you walk away confused and feeling ill
But you need the rest
And your head is in a mess, you’ve been beaten

Give it all away
Give it all away
Give it all away

I feel guilty being free and rich and idle
I’m as much to blame as anyone who allows this man to die
‘Cause in my eyes
They just hung the wrong man

Do you think it really matters ‘cause you’re rich
That you broke the law
While a poor man stayed poor to feed his children

And he finds it so degrading to be told
That he’s grown too old
As he walks home in the cold, what can he tell them

As you watch his old grey eyes fill up with tears
As he holds his wife
And says he feels his life is nearly over

Give it all away
Give it all away
Give it all away

I feel guilty being free and rich and idle
I’m as much to blame as anyone who stood back and held his peace
‘Cause in my eyes they just wronged a true man

Do you think it really matters in the war
If you kill for God
Or you’re paid in gold to buy your conscience

I feel guilty being free and rich and idle
I’m as much to blame as any one who shuts his eyes at what he sees
‘Cause in my eyes the world’s wrong and God is dead

Give it all away
Give it all away
Give it all away

I feel guilty being free and rich and idle
I’m as much to blame as anyone who stood back and held his peace
‘Cause in my eyes they just wronged a true man

Do you think it really matters in the war
If you kill for God
Or you’re paid in gold to buy your conscience

I feel guilty being free and rich and idle
I’m as much to blame as any one who shuts his eyes at what he sees
‘Cause in my eyes the world’s wrong and God is dead

Yes, in my eyes the world’s wrong and God is dead

AIR-RAID SHELTER (Halsall)

Try and find me
Walk behind me, I’m hiding inside a disused air-raid shelter
Be a good boy, be a nice girl
Try our binding fluid, I know it will really help you
It will help you to think about your long lost friendship with the woman down the stairs

Stop the murder
Take it further than you ever really intended to do
Kill the ice man
Stop the wedding, be as good as you can to the woman who loves you

Throw a tin can, I’m a new man
I’ve been shown a new way to turn all the men away from the front line
Away from the barricade
Away from the silver blade
Away from the freezing cold
Away from the goods that can’t be sold and the child that can’t be told

Put your clothes on
I’ve just been taken on by the clothing department
If you want one
I will bring you a sample of all things that they have made
Things that they produced
Things that have no use

TELL ME WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN (Patto/Halsall)

Tell me where you been
Tell me where you’re running from
I wanna know where to find you
I wanna know where you’re coming from
Where you’re coming from

Tell me where you been
Tell me what you can do
Do you want me to tell you
That I already knew
What I already knew

Tell me where you been
How come you disappeared
How come you didn’t tell me
Or whisper in my ear
I’m getting out of here

Tell me where you been
I nearly wore out my eyeballs
I didn’t know where to find you
Oh, I didn’t like it at all
No, not one little bit
Not at all

Tell me where you been
Tell me what you saw
Well, did you make it alright
Or did you run into the law
Tell me did you run into the law

Tell me where you been
I wanna hear your story
And make the details gory
I wanna hear the truth now
In all its glory, hallelujah

Tell me where you been
Tell me what you’re running from
What you done is behind you
Well, what you want has just begun
Yeah, what you need has just begun

Tell me where you been
Put yourself in my place
How’d you manage to lose me
Come on, tell me to my face

Yeah, to my face
Tell me where you been
Has it all been a dream
Do you want me to wake up
Wake up and tell you what I’ve seen
Exactly what I’ve seen

Tell me where you been
You’ve been away so long
I’ve been meaning to tell you
Goodbye, so long

MAGIC DOOR (Patto/Halsall)

The lights went dead about an hour ago
But I just kept on burning
My head was lost on a number of things
I was hung on your returning

Are you real
Will you appear again through a magic door
Will you stay any longer than you did before

You creep up to me in the middle of the night
And leave me with the morning
But the way you act and the hours you keep
I can’t see you taking warning

Are you real
Will you appear again through a magic door
Yeah, will you say any more than you did before

My head was hot I was dizzy and high
My heart kept on exploding
My body felt weak and my mouth was dry
The glass broke I was holding

Are you real
Will you appear again through a magic door
Yeah, will you stay any longer than you did before

A door swung free in the back of my mind
The whole room filled with laughter
I spoke out loud knowing no one would hear
What was it you were after

Are you real
Will you appear again through the magic door
Will you say any more than you did before
